The Slum Run 2016 is now in its fifth year and continues to support children working in quarries with their school fees and requirements, reducing the amount of time each year that they are forced to break stones for a living.
This year, we have updated the route and it now includes spectacular views across the Acholi Quarter slum area and, if you have never seen these environments before, it will be a memorable experience, as you become aware of some of the issues that people tackle daily living in this area. Peter Ola was the winner of the inaugural Slum Run in 2012, when he won the same day as Stephen Kiprotich won the London Marathon. Later that year, Peter was killed in a rock slide and so this trophy is our tribute to his ability in athletics and the hazards that children who work in dangerous conditions around the world.
Chrysalis Athletics Club is the only registered club in Kampala open to all children and we
recently held the Kampala Kids’ Olympics event at the Namboole National Stadium in August, our first event to encourage Ugandan youth to be competitive athletes. It was an incredible success and we plan more athletics events in the future open
to children with talent in athletics.
The children of Chrysalis Athletics Club have their eyes set on medals in 2024, but we have a lot of training to go before they can expect such accolades. The Club members train every Sunday morning, thanks to support from the Namboole Stadium staff and Uganda Athletics Federation. They also train on a special road circuit with their coaches and do regular hill work for their endurance. Our objective is to make everything very fun for the children and this includes taking them to other types of sports, playing games and visiting locations around Kampala or maybe even in Gulu in Northern Uganda, where we have already started a second athletics club.
